α-硫辛酸是在1951年，美國(guó)科學(xué)家Reed等首次從豬肝中分離出來(lái)的具有活性的天然產(chǎn)物。其生理活性?xún)H局限于R 體，S體基本無(wú)活性，但也沒(méi)有毒副作用。α-硫辛酸屬于維生素B類(lèi)藥物。在臨床上α-硫辛酸用于治療神經(jīng)性糖尿病，缺血再灌注等疾病；另外α-硫辛酸對(duì)于肝病、老年癡呆、白內(nèi)障、心臟病等多種疾病有顯著的治療效果，并寫(xiě)能有效的抑制HIV-1在細(xì)胞中的擴(kuò)散。
α-硫辛酸是既具水溶性又具脂溶性的淡黃色晶體。目前仍處于右旋硫辛酸取代外消旋硫辛酸的過(guò)程之中。全世界的年需求量大概為400噸，并且正持續(xù)上漲，但產(chǎn)量?jī)H為200t左右。
現(xiàn)在普遍工業(yè)化的生產(chǎn)是用6，8-二氯辛酸乙酯為原料來(lái)合成α-硫辛酸，但是這個(gè)產(chǎn)品在夏天分子活躍，所以只能再冬天低溫的條件下生產(chǎn)。且污染很大，導(dǎo)致α-硫辛酸一直處于稀缺狀態(tài)。
α--硫辛酸別譽(yù)為“萬(wàn)能抗氧化劑”，它可以在體內(nèi)轉(zhuǎn)變成二氫硫辛酸（DHLA），硫辛酸和二氫硫辛酸都具有很強(qiáng)的抗氧化性。都能夠有效的清除自由基，預(yù)防體內(nèi)氧化應(yīng)激的反應(yīng)。
自由基誘導(dǎo)的氧化損傷長(zhǎng)期以來(lái)都被認(rèn)為是導(dǎo)致衰老發(fā)生的重要原因之一。所以α-硫辛酸可以通過(guò)消除自由基發(fā)揮抗衰老作用

Alpha-lipoic acid is an active natural product first isolated from pig liver by Reed et al., an American scientist in 1951. Its physiological activity is only limited to R body, S body is basically inactive, but there is no toxic side effect. Alpha-lipoic acid belongs to the B vitamin class. In clinic, alpha-lipoic acid is used to treat neurodiabetes, ischemia-reperfusion and other diseases. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid has a significant therapeutic effect on liver disease, senile dementia, cataract, heart disease and other diseases, and can effectively inhibit the spread of HIV-1 in cells.
