該品為薄菏油中得到的一種飽和的環狀醇。又名薄荷醇、薄荷冰。易燃，燃燒充分，燃燒中無煙。該品為無色針狀或棱柱狀結晶或白色結晶性粉末；有薄荷的特殊香氣，味初灼熱后清涼；乙醇溶液顯中性反應。本品在乙醇、氯仿、乙醚、液狀石蠟或揮發油中極易溶解，在水中極微溶解。
性質與穩定性編輯
1. 左旋的為無色針狀結晶。溶于乙醇，與油類互溶。具有涼的、清鮮的、愉快的薄荷特征香氣，帶甜的尖刺氣。給人以冷的感覺，香氣透發，但不夠持久。口味亦是鮮清甜的涼味。
2. 存在于烤煙煙葉、香料煙煙葉、主流煙氣中。
3. 天然存在于椒樣薄荷油、日本薄荷油中，少量存在于香葉油等精油中。
4. 共有12中異構體。
5. 普通的晶體表面有微量的液體油和極微量的不揮發物，合成的薄荷醇是各種異構體的混合物。
